How to edit a photo with AI
- Step 1Upload a photoJPG, PNG or WebP from your phone or computer. It is resized in your browser first, so big files are fine.
- Step 2Say what to changeOne clear instruction works best. Name the thing and where it is, then what it should become. Or tap an example.
- Step 3Press Edit photoThe result arrives in about 20–40 seconds. Download it, try another take, or keep editing the new version.
Instructions that work
- Point at it. "The blue car on the right" beats "the car".
- Say the end state. "Make the wall plain white" is clearer than "fix the wall".
- One change per pass. Download, re-upload and stack edits; each pass stays faithful.
- Protect what matters. Add "keep the face and the logo exactly as they are" when it counts.
- Quote any words. To change a sign, put the exact new text in "quotes".
Generative edit or exact fix?
An AI editor doesn't move pixels the way a brush does. It looks at your photo and your words and paints a new version that matches both. That's why it can invent a sky or a tidy table, and also why tiny details can drift.
When the photo is right but the exposure, color or size isn't, a deterministic tool is the better pick: it changes only what you ask and invents nothing.
Pick the right tool for the job
| What's wrong with the photo | Use |
|---|---|
| Remove or add an object | AI photo editor |
| New background, transparent PNG | Background remover |
| Too dark, dull or soft | Photo enhancer (exact, in your browser) |
| Too small or pixelated | Image upscaler (in your browser) |
| Wrong size for a platform | Image resizer (in your browser) |
| Selfie into a work photo | AI headshot generator |
Questions people ask
Can I edit an existing photo with AI?
Yes. Upload the photo, type the change in plain words ("remove the person in the background", "make it a snowy evening", "change the jacket to dark green") and press Edit photo. The image model redraws the picture with your change and tries to keep everything else the same.
Is this AI photo editor free?
Yes, with no sign-up and no watermark. To keep it free for everyone, each visitor can make about 8 AI edits an hour. The in-browser tools (photo enhancer, upscaler, resizer) have no limit.
How do I edit an image with AI?
Use one instruction per edit and name the thing you want changed: what it is and where it is ("the red car on the left"). Say what it should become. If a result is close but not right, download it, upload it again and make the next change, instead of packing five changes into one sentence.
Which model does the editing?
Edits go to OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst, an image model built for instruction-based editing, through Vercel AI Gateway. Your photo is resized in your browser to at most 1280 px first.
Will it keep faces and text exactly the same?
Not pixel for pixel. A generative editor redraws the whole image, so small details such as fine print, jewellery or a face seen from far away can shift slightly. Compare before and after, and for exact, non-generative fixes to brightness, color or sharpness use the photo enhancer instead.
Can ChatGPT edit photos for free?
ChatGPT can edit images you upload, and OpenAI sets usage limits on free accounts that change over time; check OpenAI's help center for the current limits. ImageSmith needs no account at all and uses an OpenAI image model through Vercel AI Gateway.
What can't it do?
It won't edit images of real public figures, create explicit or violent content, or remove watermarks and logos from other people's work. It also isn't a replacement for a retoucher on a photo where every detail must stay forensic-accurate.
Is my photo stored?
No. The photo is sent once when you press the button and is not stored by ImageSmith. Only a small thumbnail of the result is kept in your own browser history, which you can clear on the privacy page.
