Transparent PNG vs JPG
JPG has no transparency: every pixel is a color, so "removed" areas become white or black. PNG (and WebP) store an alpha channel, a fourth value per pixel saying how see-through it is. Soft edges like hair use in-between alpha values, which is why good cut-outs don't look pasted on.
Once cut out, put it in a thumbnail or resize it with the image resizer.

How does the AI background remover work?
Your photo goes to an image-editing model (GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst) that identifies the main subject, keeps it as it is, and either removes everything else to transparency or paints in the new background you picked, with a matching shadow.
What format is the cut-out?
Transparent results download as PNG, which keeps the see-through areas. Photos with a new background download as JPG.
Does it handle hair and fur?
Usually well, because the model redraws edge detail rather than tracing a hard mask. Very fine flyaway hair against a busy background is the hardest case; a plainer original helps.
Is it free, and are my photos stored?
Free with a fair-use limit of about 8 edits an hour. Your photo is sent once when you press the button and is not stored by ImageSmith.
Why does the subject sometimes change slightly?
Generative editors redraw the image rather than cutting pixels, so small details such as text on a T-shirt can shift. Compare before using it for anything where exact detail matters.
